ART ON EMELINE
July 10 & 11
11am – 5pm
508 Emeline Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA
fine art, jewelry, fabric arts & more
I have added these wallets to the sail cloth bags I was making at Christmas. The bags are awesome and I can’t make enough, they will be there. I hope the wallets are so well received! They’re a lot of fun, lightweight, many pocketed and of course, strong! These are but a few colors and styles. I’m going to make some for guys too but I get carried away with making things pretty. Patrick made his about eight years ago and it’s needing to be replaced but he’s really hard on things, so they should last awhile. There are some wonderful artists with great stuff so I hope to see you there!

It’s my turn to get ready for Hawaii. I made a pattern from a shirt I had to make a summer frock. The empire waist ties around back and I added deep side pockets. I now have to put aside this fun and make bags and wallets and such for the summer show on July 10 and 11. I will post here soon with details.

Tule Fog got her final details Sunday afternoon after passing inspection. Less than 3 weeks and it’s off to Hawaii. I’ll post when we have the URL info for watching the race. Each boat has a transponder which tracks exactly where all the boats in the fleet are. This is both wonderful AND frustrating as hell when you want them to be going up or down and how can they possibly have done that and the other boats are all in good breeze and there they sit! They will drink the tequila I’m sending over with them as a gift, I know they will. It also requires being able to read the information on how the different boats rate, boats that will owe them time and vise versa. Another long 11 to 14 days of watching a boat race.
If anyone needs a paint job, boat, sign whatever… give me a shout. I hadn’t done painting like that in a some time and it was really fun to pick it up again.

There’s something about a flying fish that seems to say out of box to me. This is a logo for a new website that will host one’s portfolio. Brian was looking to spruce up his website, to re-design the look and feel. It’s still the old version at the moment and I look forward to seeing the makeover. If you want to see where it’s all heading you can look up his current site and watch it all transform. If you need an online portfolio I really think that once it’s all finished and with the new search features etc… it should be pretty spiffy.

Which are not too exciting to photograph just yet but the flowers are beginning to finally bloom. We had so few poppies this year that I didn’t even bother. I have a million little itty bitty basils, italian parsley, walla walla onions, mustard greens, 15 various tomato plants, strawberries, kale, zucchini, beets and fennel. I’m looking forward to a bumper crop of goodness.

The world would be a perfect place if all I had to do was design Acroyoga flyers for Amy.

Anyone who knows me knows I don’t do 6:30 am. On a good day my tea is finished by 8-8:30am and I’m up and functioning then and only then. This week however I had to get to the boat and get the painting done before the sun hit and I had a lot of little bits to do. Steve’s boat Tule Fog will be double handed by Steve and Patrick on July 5 in the Pac Cup- fun race to Hawaii. There was never the new name, it was Geranimo, put on the boat and one can not sail into Hawaii with no name on the boat. Steve had this logo created from the paw print of his beloved dog Tule Fog and it was embroidered in this fashion on the crew jackets. I scanned the image and traced it and printed it out big and here we go. I’ve got a bit more to do but the boat will be properly done and if I have it my way all the boats behind them can know who it was that won. Go team Tule!

Creole food was a big part of my life in my early 20′s while living and cooking every day with the owner of a fairly successful creole restaurant. It was a friend’s dog’s 14th birthday(not memorial day) This is a dog with a boat named after her, a boat that Patrick and Steve will race in the Pac Cup this summer. A creole theme, Steve cooked up a bunch o’ crawdads that were so beautiful, juicy & delicious. I dusted off the brain and looked at some recipes for gumbo. It had been a while but I figured I still had the taste in my mouth and I was certain Patrick was gonna love making roux. This he did and wonderfully, it came to a rich deep chocolate brown.
I will give the ingredients here for Janette:
ROUX, cook till very deep in color |
cup & 1/2 vegetable oil |
cup & 1/2 flour
ADD vegies to roux and cook till soft |
2 medium onions , chopped fine |
2 medium bell pepper , chopped fine |
celery , chopped fine |
okra, I cut mine small and cook with the roux some before adding the rest of the vegies |
6 -8 cloves garlic , minced |
thyme |
salt |
cayenne pepper |
bay leaves
ADD meat last and cook awhile longer |
pound smoked sausage , such as andouille
ADD before serving |
fresh parsley |
medium scallions , white and green parts, sliced thin |
pepper
tobasco on the table’s a must |

Here it is May 27th and I’m still making soup. I left on my bike yesterday to head over to Shoppers for some ingredients to the gumbo for a party Saturday only to come out and find I’d be riding home in a pretty damn cold rain. Although it was fun I came home soaked and inspired to make soup not salad. We had a boatload of Oaxacan rice left over that needed to be eaten so I started there. I was also NOT going back out to the store. After a mental note of what I did have I decided on something with split peas and rice would work. For the Oaxacan rice you need to brown onions, cook the rice in chicken stock, and stir in heavy cream, a generous of corn and parsley. I started the soup by browning an onion with some celery in a few slices of bacon grease(I happened to buy bacon for the gumbo). Set the bacon aside to dice and sprinkle over the soup when serving. I prefer to have my bacon crispy on top rather than leaving it in the soup where it stays soft. Next pour in enough stock to cook the split peas and cook about 45 minutes to an hour. A half hour into it add some diced carrot. When the peas were done I added equal parts rice, maybe more. I spiced after adding the rice as it has a strong and sweet flavor, using salt, pepper, cayenne, cinnamon, clove and a bit of balsamic. This soup turned out surprisingly delicious and very hearty. Don’t forget to top with bacon if you’re so inclined.

This proved to be a difficult design job in that I had at least 12 images of the cutest darn kids ever, the clay won. This was a re-design of a cover done in 1995 though the interior images looked to be from another era entirely.
The fun thing was that one of my closest friend’s daughter went here and they still remembered them. When I was a new mom I went to Cabrillo and took classes at the ECE Center. Here I learned of Magda Gerger and all the wonderful things about being with little kids that were certainly not revealed by my own mother. I really encourage anyone to read the quick little bit that explains her philosophy. I’m proud to have any book jacket I designed for kids to be foreworded by this fine woman. Any reference in name to the baby food is simply coincidence by the way, that was Daniel Frank Gerber.
